The disciplinary horizon in Stomatology: Research in oral health
Keywords:
stomatology, research, oral healthSynopsis
Stomatology is a highly relevant field of health sciences that goes far beyond the simple aesthetics of a smile. Research in stomatology plays a crucial role in improving people's overall health and well-being, and its impact extends to multiple aspects of daily life and general health. Here, we explore the vital importance of this research in two critical areas: the prevention and treatment of oral diseases, and the interconnection between oral health and systemic health.
Studies in this discipline have allowed a deep understanding of the causes, risk factors and mechanisms behind a wide range of oral diseases. From dental cavities to periodontal diseases, this research has provided essential information to develop preventative strategies and effective treatments. Thanks to research, dental professionals can diagnose and address these conditions in their early stages, thus avoiding serious and costly complications in the future.
A notable example is research in cariology, which has led to the development of fluorides and dental sealants that strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities from forming. The identification of specific bacteria in periodontal diseases has led to more precise approaches to their treatment and control, which in turn has positively impacted cardiovascular health and diabetes in patients with these conditions.
Other scientific studies have shown links between oral diseases and medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, and even neurodegenerative diseases. Chronic oral inflammation, for example, can trigger systemic inflammatory responses that contribute to chronic diseases.
Research in stomatology is vitally important in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases, as well as in understanding the interconnections between oral health and systemic health. These investigations not only improve the quality of life of individuals, but also contribute to the reduction of costs in long-term healthcare by addressing health problems before they become serious. The field of dentistry continues to advance thanks to scientific curiosity and the commitment of researchers, leaving a lasting impact on global health. In this sense, this book presents research that delves into oral health research from the perspective of stomatological practice.
