Synopsis

This book examines the relationship between the strategic process and the business development of communal companies in Peru, taking the Empresa Comunal de Servicios Múltiples Rancas S.A (ECOSERM Rancas) as a case study. Communal companies represent an organizational form of collective ownership of peasant communities that seek to promote productive activities in their territories. In Peru there are around 7,000 communities that cover almost 40% of the national territory. However, these rural communities have not received sufficient support from the government to boost their production and economic development. Faced with this problem, some communities have managed to organize themselves into communal companies to undertake formalized business activities. ECOSERM Rancas is an emblematic case that has been operating for 25 years in the central area of the country.
