Pisco is an alcoholic beverage obtained by distilling grapes and has managed to generate a sense of patriotism and identity among the Peruvian population. A unique, high-quality spirit with over 400 years of history, it got its name from the Pisco region (from pishko, the Quechua word meaning "bird"), the home of the potters responsible for making the clay vessels that later housed the chicha and wine.
Pisco is positioned as a great symbol of Peru's historical past; it also reinforces the identity of the population. Its manufacturing process, which involves the participation of different people throughout the country, is primarily artisanal, which has allowed it to reaffirm its cultural heritage, highlighting this cultural symbol as something uniquely Peruvian to thousands of foreigners. Likewise, this distilled grape spirit has gained international acclaim thanks to the participation of the country's government authorities, who have successfully positioned the product as a patented brand. This has led to the immediate association of the beverage with Peru abroad, as well as with the natural, social, and ethnic impact it possesses. The authorities in charge must continue promoting Pisco as their flagship product, prioritizing positive perceptions among tourists. They must also provide greater support to the inhabitants who produce it, to strengthen the identity that can be created between the population and the beverage.
