Synopsis

This work presents a comprehensive and methodologically rigorous framework for solid waste landfill closure and reclamation, using the "Piedras Gordas" sanitary landfill in Palpa, Ica, as a detailed case study. The authors meticulously structure the text, initially establishing a solid diagnostic and regulatory foundation based on Peruvian environmental legislation, particularly the Integrated Solid Waste Management Law (D.L. No. 1278). The book subsequently presents a detailed technical-engineering plan, systematically addressing crucial phases such as earthworks, final cover design, leachate and biogas management, and post-closure monitoring. A key strength of the research lies in its robust field analysis, which includes a comprehensive survey of 319 heads of households to assess community perceptions and validate the proposed interventions. By correlating the technical dimensions of the closure plan with the environmental recovery of the site through statistical analysis, the study successfully corroborates its central hypothesis: a well-executed closure plan is directly and significantly related to the effective recovery of a degraded area. The result is a valuable guide that not only provides practical guidance for municipal authorities but also contributes significantly to the academic literature on sustainable waste management in Peru.
