Synopsis

Primary education is a fundamental educational level for establishing the attitudes and skills that a child needs to function in the next levels such as secondary and higher education. Therefore, the subjects taught in this must have an adequate pedagogical methodology and necessary and fruitful contents.
One of the subjects of the primary education system is mathematics. Mathematics ―according to Richland and Begolli (2020)― is one of the sciences that requires, in the current century, educational reforms around the teaching-learning process around the world, since effective training in this science cooperates with solving various world problems and the success of the world economy.
Mathematics covers various topics related to numbers and operations, such as algebra, geometry, and arithmetic. The concept of mathematics ―such as Batista et al. (2019) points out ― it involves arithmetic, since the latter involves the study of numbers, their properties and operations (Batista et al., 2019). Arithmetic is also another subject that can be found in primary education.
Arithmetic -according to Coronado (2019)- is necessary to learn the branches of mathematics and for any profession that appears in the world. Therefore, it follows that arithmetic is not only the basis for mastering other fields of mathematics but also allows the development of other sciences in the world. In this sense, arithmetic is shown as an essential part of mathematics that is used to perform different human activities.
Mathematics and arithmetic are two primordial issues in human life, therefore, their teaching-learning process must be properly managed, and contemplate methodologies and techniques that allow the student to acquire the knowledge that is desired in period certain. Currently, you can find several strategies or pedagogical models.
Pedagogy, holistically, is defined as a set of theories and methodological platforms that poses problems, analyzes them, formulates hypotheses, and provides results in relation to knowledge about education (Santos, 2019). This set of methodological information is necessary for teachers to exercise an efficient professional practice and meet educational requirements.
Pedagogical models receive special attention in the educational process, since they propose a set of competencies that a subject must present in societies; These models focus on the student-teacher relationship, and on the training of humans with integral talent (Gómez et al., 2019).
For all the above, in this document, relevant aspects of the teaching of mathematics in primary education, pedagogical models or methods, arithmetic competence and the benefits of the pedagogical methodology in increasing arithmetic competences are described.
